Trying to figure out how to combine a home office and guest bedroom? It’s easier than you think. We’ve incorporated an adorable day bed into our home office, effectively turning the room into a multi-functional space that serves as both a guest bedroom, office, and a second den for our family.

Home Office & Guest Bedroom Design
This home office is nestled on the 3rd floor of our home and was previously an unusable attic space. By transforming this space into a useable room we are increasing the value of our home and adding functional space for our family. When making design decisions about a space start with thinking about the functionality of the space. What makes the most sense for your family and how can you combine two rooms into one to get the most bang for your buck?!
We decided to use this space for multiple purposes: a home office for me, a guest bedroom for my sister’s visits, and a “big kid den” for our kids to watch movies.

The Before
As you can see below this room was previously an old attic space and with a little love it’s become a beautiful home office and guest bedroom combo. Let’s get into some of the specifics that helped transform this space.
- Materials: Beadboard was chosen for all the walls in this room to elevate its charm and create a coastal feel without overspending. While tongue and groove would have been preferred, beadboard was chosen due to budget constraints. The vertical lines visually draw the eye up, making it great for rooms with lower ceilings. This affordable option can easily transform a room!
- Paint: I opted for Benjamin Moore’s “Simply White” in an eggshell finish — my preferred choice for achieving a fresh and clean look that isn’t overly stark. It’s truly amazing how a fresh coat of paint can revitalize a space.
The Daybed
To make this space multi-functional, we needed to decide between an actual bed or a day bed. Since we only have visitors a few times a year, we opted for a daybed!
This daybed is amazing! It serves as a sofa for movie nights, a cozy spot for me to get away from my desk during work and a bed for guests. The bottom pulls out as a trundle, so it can comfortably sleep two people, and then be tucked away to provide more space. I’ll also note that this bed is SO comfortable, the mattresses are from Amazon and my husband and I want to purchase the king-size for our bedroom.

The Reading Nook
The attic features charming little window nooks that I loved from the moment we bought the house. I immediately envisioned them as cute reading spots for our kids. We had our carpenter create window seats with built-in storage for toys and books, creating a functional area that would otherwise been unusable space. The custom cushions are from cushion source, they make custom cushions and have a variety of cute patterns to chose from! The roman shades are from Amazon and are affordable and great quality.

Home Office Decor
The artwork above the daybed is my kids’ artwork that I saved for years. The frames are super from Target and super affordable! It brightens my office and makes me happy to look at their creations throughout the day. It’s a great budget-friendly way to decorate a space and makes my kids so excited to see their artwork framed.
All in all, I am incredibly pleased with this versatile space. It’s the perfect setting for our movie nights, provides me with a daily workspace, and offers my sister and her soon-to-be husband a comfortable and private area to stay when they visit. Let me know what you think below!
