DIY Antique Buffet Makeover

This gorgeous DIY antique buffet is a piece of cake makeover that anyone can tackle in just a few hours! I managed to pull it off for less than $200, and the end result looks like an expensive piece you would purchase from a high-end furniture retailer. You can easily customize it to match your home decor by choosing different paint colors and hardware.

Sadly, antique pieces are not as popular as they used to be due to the mass production of furniture and the convenience of modern shopping. My grandparents owned an antique shop so I grew up appreciating the history and charm of these older pieces. There is something timeless and special about the craftsmanship and history that is hard to replicate. So, instead of paying more for a new piece of furniture that lacks the same level of character, consider bringing an antique buffet or furniture piece back to life. With a little love you can transform a worn-out piece into a charming unique addition to your home!

DIY Antique Buffet Steps

I’m no expert at fixing up furniture, but I’ve had a go at a few projects, like refinishing old twin beds for my son’s room. Let me tell you, it was a whirlwind of emotion and regret at times, but worth it in the end! If your furniture needs some serious love, I’d recommend researching restoration a bit more extensively. But if you just need a basic paint job, I’ve got the simple quick steps I used to transform our buffet.

  • Step 1: Remove hardware and lightly sand the surface using 100-150 grit sandpaper.
  • Step 2: Clean the surface using a damp rag and let dry.
  • Step 3: Apply 1-2 coats of primer. If it’s a darker piece I recommend two coats. I always use whatever Benjamin Moore recommends (they are the best!), Kiltz all-purpose works great too!
  • Step 4: Lightly sand with 180-220 grit sandpaper, clean the surface using a damp rag.
  • Step 5: Ready to paint! Paint two coats of Benjamin Moore’s Advance Interior Waterborne Alkyd in the color of your choice. I outlined below the color and hardware I used.
Color and Hardware

Benjamin Moore’s Azurite– This color is beautiful and paired well with the coastal artwork I hung above it. The paint is self-leveling ensuring a smooth, flawless finish that resembles a professional spray. This is the perfect option for any DIY paint project. I was absolutely amazed by the final result.

Marella Classic Beaded Ring PullVan Dyke’s Restorers has beautiful timeless hardware reminiscent of what might be original to most antique furniture pieces. I love the classic beaded ring design and it really helped elevate the look of the buffet.

I am absolutely thrilled with the final product. The luster, color, and hardware have transformed this old piece into something entirely new and unique. This DIY antique buffet project was incredibly simple, taking only a few hours of my time and costing less than $200. It’s the ideal paint project for any DIY beginner.
